Paul Thomas Power, 87, passed peacefully with the Lord on Thursday, June 15, 2017 surrounded by his family and his beloved wife of 61 years, Grace Power.

Paul was born on December 12, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Betty and Thomas Power.  He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa in 1949.  In 1955, he graduated from St. Louis University Law School.  In 1956, he taught at the graduate school of Business at Iowa University.  Paul then entered the Air Force and practiced as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General Corps.

 In 1959, he moved to Kansas City and began an illustrious career in the insurance industry.  He was truly a giant in the industry.  Paul received many exceptional industry awards which are too many to count.  In 1980, he started his own business in health insurance, Power Group Designs.  From a small business, Paul developed this company to one of the largest group health providers in the Kansas City area.

 Paul was a man of family and faith.  Paul strongly believed that his faith required action. To that end, Paul was deeply involved in many civic organizations and gave freely to many charitable organizations, most of the time anonymously.

 Paul was a great storyteller. Paul would often embellish his stories with Irish and Italian accents which were spot on.  He was a practical joker and had a great sense of humor.  Paul was an avid golfer and could be seen practicing late into the night.  He never got any better. Paul cast a great presence.  When Paul entered the room, he held the room and everybody truly enjoyed being around him.

Paul was a member of the Cure of Ars Church, Indian Hills Country Club, as well as the Boulders of Carefree, Arizona.

Paul married the love of his life, Grace May O’Bryan in 1955.  They were blessed with six children.  Paul is survived by his wife Grace, daughter Erin Murray (Jim), son Tim Power (D.J.), son David Power, son Paul “Chip” Power (Brenda), son Patrick Power, and daughter, Molly Pastor.  Paul is preceded in death by his brother Louis and his sister Rosemary (Power) Hines and her husband Richard Hines and son-in-law Scott A. Pastor.  Paul leaves behind eight grandchildren, Casey, Jonathan, Allison, Thomas, Sam, Emily, Jack and Grace, and many nieces and nephews. 

A funeral is scheduled for Sunday June 18, 2017, at Cure of Ars Church in Leawood, Kansas at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Catholic Charities, or Welcome House of Kansas City.
