Lucy Maria Cunningham
Oct 11,1964---Jan 01,2018

Lucy Cunningham, 53, died January 1, 2018 of complications from Alzheimer’s. She came into this world on October 11, 1964  was the daughter of Rosemary and Bob Cunningham and the sister of Robin, Mark, Kevin, Sarah and Duffy.   She was born with Down syndrome, which provided her with challenges, but with many gifts as well.  In the day, children with disabilities were often sent to live in an institution, but that was never an option for Lucy, she was coming to live with her family.  As children it was explained to us, Lucy’s siblings, that our family was chosen to raise this very special baby girl and we would like to think we all rose to the challenge.

Rosemary and Bob were pioneers in seeking out the best care and education for Lucy.  Once Lucy finished her schooling she wanted to move out of the house like all her siblings. She lived at Immacolata Manor, Lakemary, Clarion Park apartments, New Alliance, Lakemary again, and her final days were at Broadmoor, a Care Haven home.

Despite having numerous knee surgeries, Lucy was an accomplished athlete. She won many medals with Special Olympics, excelling in swimming, track and bowling. Lucy was noted for her “savant like” memory, always remembering birthdays, anniversaries and phone numbers.  If you were a special member of the Lucy Cunningham Fan Club you might be serenaded with a Happy Birthday phone call.  Lucy was also very independent and a hard worker. She lived in her own apartment for many years and worked at Taco Bell for 17 years.

Lucy taught us all:  LOVE, PATIENCE, GRACE, LAUGHTER and PERSERVERANCE. We are all happy for Lucy to begin her new well-earned rewards in Heaven, but she also leaves behind a very sad vacuum, which will not soon be filled.

WE LOVE YOU LUCY!!!

Lucy was preceded in death by her mother Rosemary and many aunts, uncles and grandparents.  She will be missed terribly by her father Bob, stepmother Shirl, her siblings: Robin, Mark, Kevin, Sarah and Duffy, her “outlaws” Sheri, and John and Mary Frances; her nieces and nephews: Andrew, Alissa, Jordan, Seth, Daniel, Dillon, Maggie, Christopher, Ashley, Margaret Ann and Henry, and her “grands”: Camden, Eloise “Lulu”, Marin and Teagan plus a whole lot of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and many loving caregivers.

Services will be held Saturday January 6th at Cure of Ars Church at 9401 Mission Road in Leawood, KS. Rosary to be at 10 AM, Visitation at 10:30 AM, and Funeral mass at 11 AM with reception to follow.  A private burial will take place at a later date.
