Aileene Kelly Embrey, 98, Leawood, Kansas, passed away on July 29, 2018 at home.
In addition to an immediate family service and burial in Country Club Christian Church Columbarium, a Memorial will be held Aug. 21, 6:00 p.m. at Homestead Assisted Living, 12720 State Line Rd., Leawood, KS
Aileene Embrey was born July 8, 1920, the year women won the vote, in Carrollton, Missouri.
After an ideal childhood in Carrollton, the depression uprooted her family to Kansas City where she spent her senior year at Westport High School. She graduated from Kansas City Junior College in 1940 and married Jacques Embrey in 1941, divorcing in 1955. She went to secretarial school to support her family and was the executive secretary at Elko Photo Co. for many years, retiring from Dodson Insurance Group in 1986. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Avila University in 1983.
In retirement Aileene had an active civic, volunteer, and church life as President of Women’s Athanaeum, Women’s Athletic Club, and Red Bridge AARP; District Coordinator of AARP, member of Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly of Greater Kansas City, a17-year volunteer at Rozzelle Court in the Nelson-Atkins Gallery of Art, Stephen Ministries member at Country Club Christian Church and member of Tri-C’s class. She was an avid reader and bridge player, always up for a game with friends at Homestead Assisted Living, where she lived the last five years. In 2003 she cut back on volunteering to add a new role as active great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Vernon and Mildred Alice Kelly, brother Vernon Turner Kelly and son Jack B. Embrey. She is survived by three children, Gary Embrey (Annette), Gayl Reinsch (Mike Sinclair), Danny Embrey (Lona), five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was especially thankful for, loved and beloved by her family, and often said, “they keep me up and going!”
Memorial contributions may be made to Stephen Ministries at Country Club Christian Church or charity of choice.
The family wishes to thank Crossroads Hospice and Homestead Assisted Living for their loving care.
