Genna Wissing Grimsman

November 7, 1991 - March 31, 2024

Genna Wissing Grimsman of Prairie Village, KS, passed away on March 31, 2024, at the age of 32. She was born in Pasadena, CA on November 7, 1991, to Dawn and Bill Wissing, grew up in Overland Park, KS, and married Jeremy Grimsman in January 2023.

Genna graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2015 with a BSN and was working as a nurse at Olathe Medical Center’s emergency department when she was diagnosed in 2016 with stage 4B Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

After eight months of intensive treatment, a stem cell transplant, and then a relapse, she began a new immunotherapy treatment and immediately asked to return to work.  While back at work caring for patients at the University of Kansas Health System and undergoing treatments herself, she graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a Family Nurse Practitioner and continued working until her body would no longer allow it.

Genna was the epitome of grit and determination as she lived with cancer for over seven years, making the most of the time she had. Fittingly, she received the Young Alumni of the year award in 2018 from MNU for her dedicated service to her patients and her unrelenting drive in the face of obstacles.

Genna enjoyed being at the barn with her horse, Stormy, more than anywhere else on earth.  Stormy was her best friend and emotional support through some really dark days and it brings comfort knowing she’s reunited with him.  God answered our prayers when she started dating Jeremy Grimsman in 2020 and in January 2023 they had a beautiful, joy-filled fairy tale wedding.

Genna’s life was tragically cut short; however, she lives on in the hearts of those she left behind. Genna is deeply missed by her mother, Dawn Wissing, her husband, Jeremy Grimsman, her brothers Joe and Cole Wissing, and a loving circle of fiercely loyal and caring friends who devoted themselves to Genna without reservation. A host of other family members and friends consider themselves blessed to have known her.

A celebration of Genna’s life will be held on Saturday, April 6th at College Church of the Nazarene, 2020 E. Sheridan Street, Olathe, KS 66062. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 and service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a cause close to Genna’s heart.

Friend ,Pasadena ,California

I had the privilege of holding Genna soon after she was born to one of my favorite people - her mom, Dawn. I had the occasional pleasure of linking with Genna at various stages of her life. She was quiet and aware. She was smart and easy to be with. My favorite memory was when we got to spend a day at Disneyland a few years ago. We made some great memories. I’m so thankful I had the chance to know Genna. She was brave. She didn’t sit still but jumped into life in her own way. My heart hurts for Dawn and for Jeremy and all those that were close to Genna. It’s a reminder to live life to the full no matter how you feel. I’m glad I got to love Genna.

Friend to Dawn & Cassie Grimsman (Sister-In-Law) ,Olathe ,Kansas

Dawn & Grimsman family, I am saddened to see the news about Genna’s passing. I have known her fearless mom, Dawn since 2017, and had the pleasure of working alongside Genna’s Sister-In-Law, Cassie, 2019-2021. Although I did not know Genna directly, it is no surprise to read how she pushed and pushed through adversity and pain to pursue the life she lived! She sounds like one heck of an amazing woman, daughter, sister (SIL), friend, spouse, nurse, and so much more! My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew Genna. Wrapping you in warm memories and cherished times as you navigate the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. Jamie Shaffer

TO the family of Genna, she will be missed here at her KU family. She was a light every time she came to clinic and I loved just sitting with her and shotting the crap. She was strong thru and thru emotionally and physically. I spent many years with her as her palliative care nurse and will miss her very much!

Genna is someone whose name will be in my heart forever and I will continue to love and support her family in any way possible. Thank you for coming to KU and letting us get to know you Genna. Dawn and family, my heart breaks for the loss you have endured. What a special, strong and smart woman your Genna was. I knew her as a small child then enjoyed seeing glimpses of her life (and love of horses!) on Facebook. I am praying you have the strength you need one moment at a time. I am praying for you. In Christ, Wendy
