Thomas Galvin Scanlon Jr.

Thomas Galvin Scanlon Jr, 83, passed away April 14, 2019 at his home in Leawood, Kansas.

Born on January 11, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa to Thomas and Elfrieda Scanlon, he was a graduate of Rockhurst High School and earned degrees in History and Philosophy from St. Louis University. He spent seven years in the Jesuit seminary before beginning a career in pharmaceutical sales and marketing for Sandoz in California. This career suited him better than that of a priest! His social skills and savvy intellect were the perfect fit for the job where he consistently ranked number one in sales performance and was honored for his marketing contributions. He was recruited by World Airlines and moved to San Francisco, where as director of sales and marketing, he negotiated the largest air/tourism contract in aviation history at the time. Tom was promoted to vice president of sales and marketing for Standard Airlines, where he took great pride in being the youngest corporate airline vice president in the industry.

Tom’s success on the West Coast gave him the confidence to move his young family back to his hometown, Kansas City, where he begin a new career in real estate with J.C. Nichols. He often ranked in the top 1% of all Realtors in personal production in the metro area. He spent many years with J.C. Nichols but later worked for other brokers, most recently Platinum Realty in Overland Park. His biggest thrill was working with first-time home buyers and young couples as they began new chapters in their lives. Many of them became close friends, which meant the world to him.

Tom was well known for his sense of humor and compassion for people suffering, particularly with cancer and addiction. These qualities, combined with his personal experience, made him an endearing volunteer. As a two-time cancer survivor, he volunteered for Hospice House of KC and at various support groups for head and neck cancer survivors. Tom was open about his struggle with alcoholism and compassionate about the impact addiction has on others. He was an active AA sponsor proud of his 30+ years of sobriety. His fighting spirit and determination to recover from whatever was in front of him inspired many.

An avid reader and a passionate student, Tom loved to learn. His many hobbies reflect his passion for knowledge. He loved history, golf, tennis and spending time outdoors, especially in a cabin by a creek where he could write. He loved music and played piano, guitar and banjo by ear. His children have wonderful memories of their parents hosting parties with friends who would sing until the wee hours. Tom had a beautiful voice and performed in several musicals around town, his favorite being The Music Man with his daughter Katie.

He shared his love of nature with his grandchildren and enjoyed walks around the park near his home. He loved watching his grandchildren at their sporting events and was an enthusiastic cheerleader from the sidelines. A lifelong Democrat, he volunteered on many campaigns and enjoyed spirited debates with anyone willing to engage.

His father, Thomas Galvin Scanlon Sr., mother, Elfrieda Carroll Scanlon, brother, Jerry Scanlon, and grandson, Brody Williams, preceded him in death. He leaves behind his daughters, Molly Scanlon, Amy Taitt and Katie Williams (Mitch), and his sons Tom Scanlon (Diane), Steve Scanlon and Kerry Scanlon (Teri) and his sister Sue Scanlon Dunphy. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was happy to be an important part of their lives.

Tom was always in search of answers. His family finds peace in the fact that he is in the loving arms of his mother, who he adored, and in the light of his creator, who is full of the love and answers Tom sought.

An open house will take place, Saturday, April 20 at the home of Teri and Kerry Scanlon from 1-4 pm, with a Celebration of Life at 3:00 pm.

Tom’s family greatly appreciates the outpouring of love and kindness since his death. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to KC Hospice and Palliative Care, 10100 W. 87th St., Overland Park, KS 66212 or The Conservation Fund, 1655, N. Fort Myer Drive, Suite 1300, Arlington, VA  22209.

Dear Scanlon Family, being neighbors of Tom and Judy Scanlon in our early married life, and theirs, is such a great memory for us. We still talk about those happy days with fondness and laughter. The camaraderie between the young families living in the duplexes behind Baptist Memorial Hospital ( 67th and Charlotte) more than 50 yrs. ago are cherished memories. They were indeed, “ The Happy Days. “ Jo Marie & Earl Hogan

Fellow cancer survivor (SPOHNC) ,Lenexa ,Kansas

Tom befriended me early on when we first met at our local SPOHNC meetings at K.U. (this was the national support group for head & neck cancer survivors). I think it was the fellow-teacher attraction that first brought us together. We often discussed education and Tom was very interested in the relatively new on-line teaching, which I was doing at a local college. He was determined learn all he could about new method of instruction. I believe Tom eventually found a position at one of the Missouri schools. I always hoped I was a little help in this latest chapter of his life. The one thing that I will never forget about Tom is when my wife passed away, in 2013. He reached out to me and insisted that we get together for lunch. We met, had a memorable meal, and Tom shared with me his new philosophy on life; that I should NOT remain alone. He really tried to impress on me that we need to move on, and not to dwell too much on the past. I remember that day as if it was last week; and I will always remember the kindness Tom showed me after losing Jo-Anne. May his soul, and all of the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace Amen.

I was the founder of RISCO that furnished MLS services for the Johnson County Board of Realtors. My partner, Garry Wright, was a neighbor of Tom and we played poker and golf together. Last saw Tom at a KC Public Links Seniors golf event. Back in the early 70s, Tom showed my wife and i a home south of Oak Park. Proud to have known Tom and to be considered a friend.

My heart went out to your family for the loss of Thomas. I loss my mother over 10+ years ago. But I found comfort in these few scriptures. I hope they find comfort for you during this difficult time. Psalms 37:9,-11,29 9 For evil men will be done away with,j But those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth.k 10 Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more;l You will look at where they were, And they will not be there.m 11 But the meek will possess the earth,n And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance 29 The righteous will possess the earth,i And they will live forever on it.j Please look up these scriptures in your own copy of the Bible. It will give you confidence you will see Thomas again under righteous condition where he is no longer sick but restored youth and healthy. If you enjoyed reading about this hope, you can read more of God's great plans for our future at www.jw.org Your neighbor, Jeanne Strange

Tom and I were real estate agents (for different agencies) at the same time working in the Plaza, Brookside, and Johnson County areas. We were often at the same awards table and made sure to sit together and talk. Tom my was my real estate friend for all of about 15 years. He was nice, kind and a fierce competitor. Tom, rest in peace. Carrie

Saddened to hear of Tom's passing, but heartened to know he is surely in Heaven.I will miss him and all the talks and knowledge he imparted to me. I enjoyed the times we spent at my home on the PLAZA. Many times his kids would come over and Tom would drop everything to help with their homework, as a loving father does. Sympathy to all the Scanlon family on their loss.

I've been working with and for Tom for a couple of years now as his transaction coordinator. We actually met only one time, but talked frequently by phone when he was working on a sale or listing. I knew that Tom was a very intelligent man, and very well-spoken. But when I read his bio, I was blown away to find out the many talents he had, his impressive life prior to being a Platinum Realtor, and his many kindnesses to others. He truly had the heart of a servant. I will miss him and his wise counsel very much. Only a planned family matter which has been scheduled at the same time will prevent me from attending Tom's Memorial. Rest in peace, my good friend.

Tom Scanlon, accidently called me on April 12, 2019. He told me his health was going downhill and then we got into our mutual discussion about our "Hatred" of President Trump. Another topic as usual was Photography which fascinated Tom every day. I met Tom in the late 70's in the Brookside Office of JC Nichols. He was always a good Co-Op and just a guy you could talk to about everything. We stayed loosely connected over the decades as we progressed in our Careers. We had many years together at Realty Executives. He was a wonderful person and I will miss him every day! R.I.P. Tom!

Members of KU Head and Neck Cancer Support Group ,Overland Park ,Kansas

Tom was certainly one of the most unique and boisterous members we had in our support group. He had great ideas and was very supportive of our Annual Tasting Event and was also very helpful and served on our Committee for many years. The last time Betty and I saw Tom was at a Golf Driving Range and we had a great conversation and was planning on getting together for a game of golf but it never came to fruition and, we were very sorry it didn’t work out. Our best memory of Tom was how he was so helpful and inspirational to our group members. He was especially helpful to new members who were starting their Cancer Program Treatment and he had the most positive outlook that we know the new members were inspired by his demeanor. Tom was one in a million and we loved him and will miss him dearly. Rest In Peace Tom, you were the greatest.

Co-survivor ,Kansas City ,Kansas

Tom was always so very open to discuss his journey through cancer survivorship. We met at SPOHNC events and group meetings. As I got to know Tom I found that we both were survivors of another seemingly fatal disease, alcoholism. Tom was so willing to share his experiences with both maladies that I gained the strength to survive "one day at a time". Thank you Tom for your understanding and compassion.

Tom was one of the first people I got to know in the real estate business. We were always affiliated with competing companies. We did many cooperative deals together over many years. I have been looking back at the many photographs I have taken over the years of our support group since hearing of Tom's death. There he is as always, looking dapper with his sparkling eyes! Tom could easily address the physical challenges of living with the very difficult side effects of this cancer and treatment but he was most gifted at focusing on the emotional, mental and spiritual issues. What a gift he was! Jerry and I both are grateful to have known him. Sympathy to his dear family who were such an incredible support to him.

Tom and I along with John Kiekbusch coached a Cub Scout Baseball Team from St. Elizabeth's Elementary School, grades 4th and 5th.. Our sons, Steve Scanlon, Sean Callaway and Coach Kiekbusch's son (Im embarrassed to say I can't remember his name, but he played catcher and both Steve and Sean were pitchers and first basemen. This was some 40 years ago, when we were all full of life. Tom was working for J.C. Nichols at the time. He assisted me and my wife Betty in the purchase of a home in South KC, where we lived some 37 years. I enjoyed our friendship and that of the boys. On behalf of my family, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Scanlon Clan. Pat

Dear Scanlon Family, My heart is broken to hear of Tom's passing. I wish I could have been there for his celebration of life but just found out today. My first meeting with Tom was when he was purchasing his condo at Tomahawk Creek. I assisted him on his home selections for his condo. When he closed on his home he stopped by with a beautiful pink azelea plant, thanking me for helping him. He was a true inspiration to me and decided to get my Real Estate License and that was 15 years ago.I worked with him at Realty Executives and Platinum Realty. Every time I saw Tom at any of the Realtor events, I would be honored to sit with him and talk about the industry. I will miss Tom and I am so very sorry to his family, for your great loss of a wonderful man.

I first met Tom when I was 15 years old. My parents hired him to list our family home on W. Meyer Blvd. Decades later, our paths crossed again when he joined my office at Kansas City Regional Homes, where we worked together. I would tease him for not remembering me from 1979, and we'd laugh about that! Tom was a great guy, and will be missed.

Tom was a very good friend to my dad, David Boyer. I knew Tom and always enjoyed his company. I was actually selling my first house to my neighbor and Tom assisted in all the paperwork for us for free!!! At the time I really had no concept for what that meant at the time. Since then, I am a real estate agent and like Tom first time home buyers are my favorite!!! This was a very interesting and touching obituary. My dad told me about Tom before the Kansas City Association of Realtors shared this. I knew Tom but wish I knew him better now. Your in my thoughts.
