Irl Douglas "Doug" Wasson

May 28, 1954 - August 2, 2021

Irl Douglas "Doug" Wasson, was born May 28th, 1954, the second oldest child of Irl Bernard Jr., and Beverly Wasson of Kansas City, Missouri.

Doug graduated from Ruskin High school in 1972. Shortly after graduating high school, Doug and Audrey started dating and were together ever since. They married August 8, 1975. Doug adored his wife more than anything. They had many great times together. Both enjoyed their trips to Sanabel Island, Florida, shell collecting together. Audrey was his devoted caregiver through his cancer. She was a devoted wife, and best friend to him always.

Doug and Audrey have 2 children, Lauren Brooke (Schmidt) and Aaron Douglas Mathias. Doug cherished his children. He enjoyed coaching his son’s 3&2 baseball team for many years. Baseball was a passion of Doug’s since childhood.

For the last 18 years, he was able to share his passion for real estate with his daughter, bringing her into the business with RE/MAX State Line in 2003. They built a successful real estate team over the last 18 years together in our KC metro area.

Doug had 3 grandsons: Aiden Douglas Wasson, Collin Douglas Schmidt, and Gavin James Schmidt. Aiden graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School this year, and Doug was elated to be able to attend with his family.  Collin is the middle grandson. His passion for baseball was a huge past-time for Grandpa Doug, especially through his cancer diagnosis. He was able to pass time listening and watching something he loved. Gavin is the youngest grandson. Grandpa loved to watch Gavin tumble and cartwheel. One of his favorite things was seeing Gavin cartwheel on the beach.

Doug had several careers, but his longtime career was selling real estate.  In 1978 he joined Seville Real Estate near 75th and State Line Road. In 1983, Doug joined a group of agents that formed RE/MAX State Line Real Estate, Inc.  He continued to work with this group and company for the next 38+ years. Doug and his daughter Lauren created “The Doug Wasson Team”. This was something Doug was very proud of.

Doug had a strong passion for hunting. His father would take him along with his younger brother to hunt birds and deer. This passion led him to his love of selling land and farms as well as hunting. His favorite place was the Flint Hills in Kansas. Doug owned a farm with his father. This was also a favorite place of his. Hunting, fishing, riding 4 wheelers, morel mushroom hunting, and campfire cookouts were some of his favorite times. He was able to enjoy many special times hunting with some of his closest friends and family here.

Doug also enjoyed loud music and road tripping-most currently loving country music, riding his chopper motorcycle, and cruising KC in a recent purchase of a Camaro SS convertible for his family to enjoy. The recent ride he took his mother on at Lake Jacomo with the top down will be cherished by her always.

Doug passed away peacefully, August 2, 2021 at KC Hospice House with his wife at his side.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Irl Bernard Wasson and Mary Margaret Wasson, maternal grandparents Roscoe Rollins and Inies Rollins, and his father, Irl Bernard Jr.

Doug is survived by his wife Audrey, mother Beverly Russell, sister Debbie Dierking (Dennis), brother Dan (Leslie), sister in law BethAnn Mayfield, daughter Lauren Schmidt (Steve), son Aaron, 3 grandchildren-Aiden, Collin, and Gavin. Doug also leaves behind and very much loved his many nieces, nephews and their children.

What I know of Doug is mostly through my 30+ years of knowing his wife, Audrey. My experience of Doug, though, is that any time I was at their house and Doug was home, he shared the biggest, warmest, friendliest smile of welcome to me. That smile, in itself, was a gift I will miss. My deepest sympathies to the family on their loss.

I was Doug's Broker in the early 1980's at RE/MAX Central on the Plaza which was absorbed into RE/MAX State Line. Doug was always so upbeat and made our real estate business a lot more fun. ,Kansas City - I am a Broker Associate with Platinum Realty at 1705 Baltimore. ,Missouri

I was Doug's Broker in the early 1980's at RE/MAX Central on the Plaza which was absorbed into RE/MAX State Line. Doug was always so upbeat and made our real estate business a lot more fun. I think I saw Doug the last time about 10 years ago at a Pig Roast Bar-B-Que at Que Que Ward and Eddie Colon's home off of Ward Parkway. Life really has flown bye. Doug made a deep mark on my own memory of our lifetime and it was always the best of experiences! Now that I am in the midst of a little cancer fight myself, Doug's passing really makes the point, about how many people we all know are and will battle cancers at some time in their lives and how much more we need each other. Rest in Peace Wild Man!

I remember Doug’s infectious smile and his zest for life, particularly deer hunting out here in the Flint Hills. He was a great friend to me, but also to my husband, Bill, his hunting buddy. My son, Tim, enjoyed the last several years deer hunting on the Flint Hills pastures. He was a mentor to Tim and became like a father figure after the death of Tim’s dad, Bill. He will be missed and I will miss his smile and laugh as well as the pictures of deer he sent to me showing his trophies.
