Gerald "Jerry" Holte Uppman, Age: 93

Aug 02, 1929 - Oct 20, 2022

Gerald “Jerry” Holte Uppman died Oct. 20, 2022, of complications from prostate cancer. He was 93. He was devoted to his wife and children and provided for them by working for 29 years as an advertising executive at WDAF-TV. A gifted amateur musician, Jerry played guitar and banjo in several local bands and often entertained in nursing homes.

Jerry was born August 2, 1929, the oldest of the five children of Gus and Stella Uppman. He grew up in Minneapolis during the Depression, surviving a serious childhood bout with pneumonia. After high school, he and three friends took the quintessential American road trip to find work in California driving a 1931 Chevrolet Jerry bought from his dad for $175. They lived on apple butter, patched constant flat tires, and slept in jails or under the car until they ran out of money and went home.

He attended the American Institute of the Air in Minneapolis and became an announcer at KSJB in Jamestown, North Dakota (“Six-ten on your radio dial, CBS for the top of the nation”). In 1951 he was drafted and, because he could type 60 words per minute, earned a spot in the Army Signal Corps. He served for two years and spent time in Korea. After returning home, he met his future wife, Marilyn Meier, on a blind date in Fargo. They were married 62 years and had three children. Jerry described the early years of his young family as the best time of his life.

Jerry was an active member of Colonial Church in Prairie Village. He served as a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 92. He played music nearly every day of his life. In retirement, he and Marilyn traveled often to traditional jazz festivals, ragtime festivals, and to Paris.

Jerry was curious, affable, patient, creative, and private. He loved cars and the key of G. He had an excellent baritone singing voice. He survived Marilyn’s death in 2018 with courage and aplomb, but his family could tell how much he missed her.

Jerry leaves behind his sister Joyce Wilkin; his brothers Gordon Uppman and Steve Uppman (Faye); his children John, Susie, and Elizabeth (Chucho); his grandchildren Matt, Julia, Erin, and Lucia; and many other relatives and friends. A memorial service is planned for some time in December at Colonial Church, 7039 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208. Please send memorial gifts to Cross-LinesFriends of Chamber Music, or Friends of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The family can never thank Faye Uppman enough for her compassionate, tender care during Jerry’s final days.

A memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Colonial Church in Prairie Village, Ks.

jerry was one of the longest tenured members of the Little Big Band and a great personal friend. He loved all kinds of music, especially the big bands and dixieland. he was also a long time member of the Kansas City Dixieland Band. Jerry and I along with others played at a nursing home in Overland Park called the Birthday Band. what great fun it was. Jerry was a remarkable person and especially a fine gentleman in every sense of the word. Lew

Jerry played banjo many times for us: at Theater in the Park, with my Ragtime Orchestra, and on the occasional gig. Jerry was unfailingly positive, supportive, and fun, and it was always a pleasure making music with him. The lives of all musicians who were fortunate enough to work with Jerry have been enriched through knowing him.

Long time friend (and fellow traveler) ,Blaine ,Minnesota

Jerry and I first met in 1940 at Oakwood grade school in Columbia Heights, MN (6th grade). We were good friends ever since then. We shared many life experiences together. Most significant was "the trip". California and back (partway) with a sojourn in Chicago, living wit my Cousin Margie for several months. The one signifiant part of our life not shared was the military. Jerry served in the Army, I served in the Coast Guard. We enjoyed playing together from time to time. As you may know, drummers like to hang around musicians?! We continued our friendship after military service. Making regular trips to Overland Park and Prairie Village. We both lost our wonderful life companions in recent years, Mickey and Marilyn, who also were good friends. Jerry was a kind, generous, talented man and a friend in every sense of the word. I will miss him dearly. We will all all meet again some day when we will then jam with Dixieland music.

Marilyn and I were Alpha Gamma Deltas together in college and fast friends once each of us moved to Kansas City. We made cookies for one another and enjoyed each other's company along with Jerry Uppman, her husband, and my husband Jerry Moyer.y ,Lakewood ,New Jersey

God Bless You, Jerry Uppman. You were a wonderful man. So good to Marilyn and so much fun for all of us. Keep that banjo going and get all those angels in heaven to dancing with Dixie. And give Marilyn a big hug from me. Tell her we are busy making Christmas cookies again this year. But I'm sure she already knows. Hope you both can smell the wonder aroma of gingersnaps in the oven. Love, Bunny

I was saddened to learn of Jerry’s death. I knew him in the early 1950s when he lived in Jamestown and then later in Fargo. He was a good friend and we (my family) always enjoyed his company. At one point my younger sister Janice and Jerry dated. I always looked forward to receiving your mother’s Christmas letter and picture. My sincere condolences to his family and friends Marian Andrews Hilborn.
