Bertha Anna Blum

August 15, 1939 – November 26, 2024

Bertha Anna Blum, a beloved early childhood professional and small business owner in Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, at the age of 85. Her life was a testament to love, compassion, and resilience, and she left a lasting mark on all who knew her.

Bertha is survived by her children, James E. (Stacey) Blum and Frances I. Blum; her grandchildren, Crecia D. Blum, Melody D.R. (Taylor) Meyer, Hailey E. Blum, and Piper A.I. Drinkard; and her great-grandchildren, Tristan D. Meyer and Trinity D. Meyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosie D. Hawk and John R. Hawk; siblings Barbara A. Appleberry, Dorothy Fisher, and Jim Hawk; sister-in-law Jane Hawk; her great-grandson Baby Taylor Dalton Meyer; and her stepsons, Robert E. Blum and Rowan C. Blum.

Bertha was born in Osage County, MO, on August 15, 1939. Having a colorful childhood, she grew up with a great sense of humor and sharp wit – trademark traits she carried with her through all of life’s experiences. After moving to Kansas City, she held various jobs until she found her true calling for working with children. She began working for Brittain Day Nursery at 31st and Harrison, and in 1977, she seized the opportunity to purchase the business. Under her leadership, the daycare thrived and became an important cornerstone of the community until her retirement in 2015. Through her decades-long dedication to her passion, she raised, nurtured, and cared for hundreds of children – many of whom stayed in contact with her even as they began raising families of their own, creating a legacy of loved that spanned generations.

Bertha took immense pride in her own children, celebrating each accomplishment they achieved; however, the arrival of her grandchildren brought her life’s deepest joy. She always said their births changed her life for the better, and each had their own unique, cherished relationship with her where they felt the unconditional acceptance and love that only a grandmother can provide. The arrival of her great-grandchildren expanded her heart even further, and she delighted in sharing their latest milestones with everyone she met.

In her later years, Bertha faced formidable health challenges with unwavering courage and optimism, approaching each battle with her characteristic radiant smile and ‘let’s do it’ attitude. Surrounded by the love and care of her family, she showed extraordinary bravery and strength throughout it all.

She will be fondly remembered for her classic home-cooked dishes, witty comebacks, and boundless acceptance of others.  She was always up for an adventure, especially when it involved the grandkids. From exploring the Scottish Highlands and London to a magical journey to Disney World, a recent escapade in Las Vegas, and the always fun family reunions in Lebanon, MO, and visits to Branson, her zest for life and love of family left lasting impressions on each of her new friends she made.

Bertha’s kindness, grit, resilience, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of all who knew her. Details about her celebration of life are forthcoming.
