Cynthia “Cindy” O'Hara

Oct 09, 1946 - Mar 15, 2026

Born in Chicago to Ralph and Anita Bowers in October of 1946, Cynthia “Cindy” Bowers grew up in New Mexico alongside her two brothers, Jeff and Richard. She met the love of her life, Terry, at Phillips University in Oklahoma, and together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service.

Terry and Cindy spent most of their married life in Kansas City, Missouri, where they raised their two daughters, Lauren and Rachel. Cindy helped start a church preschool and remained deeply involved in every aspect of church life, offering her time, energy, and heart wherever it was needed.

Cindy and Terry purchased a Sylvan Learning Center franchise and nurtured it into a thriving business. Cindy was the heart of the center; her patience, encouragement, and belief in each child helped students find both success and confidence.

Cindy loved to read, to cook, and gave the very best hugs in the world. Her warmth and love touched everyone who knew her.

She passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026. Cindy is survived by her husband, Terry; her daughters, Lauren (Craig) and Rachel (Byron); her grandchildren, Cora and Crosby; and her brothers, Jeff and Richard.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to Mid-Continent Public Library or the Alzheimer's Association.

Cindy was a wonderful extended family member to me. She was always so warm, loving and kind. One of my fondest memories is of her having cooking lessons with me and my brother. Others include her sweet laugh. She was a wonderful person who made the world a better place.

I was introduced to Cindy and Terry by Terry Becker on my second trip to Kansas City in 2015. She greeted me with warmth and friendship after having just met me. Through our ten-year friendship, she was happy for my joys, concerned for my concerns, and shared my sorrows. She always inquired after my brother, and listened to my stories. She was the spirit of our church, greeting every new arrival with care and attention. She was beloved by those who knew her. I miss her and know that she has made an indelible mark on my life. God bless and keep you.

What a wonderful wife, mom, friend, teacher, grandmother and person Cindy was here on earth. I remember first meeting Cindy and what an incredibly warm person she was. I instantly loved her! Then through the years I looked forward to (Lauren) my friend, roommate and her sister (Rachel) inviting me to gatherings… because the most hospitable and fun couple would be there…Terry & Cindy!

My deepest condolences to you and the girls, Terry. So many fun memories at swim meets with the kids and sailing together at Smithville. Cindy's energy and fun demeanor provided sunshine to every event. Though we haven't seen each other for years, you and Cindy are woven into the fabric of our lives. My prayers for comfort and healing to you all.
