Michael ‘Mike' M. Benson, Age: 76

May 02, 1949 - Apr 27, 2026

Michael ‘Mike’ M. Benson passed away on April 27, 2026, at the age of 76. Mike was born to Lawrence Edward “Bud” Benson and Verda Jane Benson on May 2, 1949, in Herington, Kansas. After graduating from Emporia State University, Mike became a teacher, dedicating 4 decades to teaching Physical Education in the Shawnee Mission School District. He was a successful NCAA Division I women’s basketball referee and small-college volleyball referee. He finished his referee career as an Evaluator of Officials at the University of Kansas. In retirement, he built a thriving pool management business.

Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Jane. Together they blended their families, creating a home filled with laughter and joy.  They enjoyed lake life and traveling to the beaches of Florida with family and friends. Mike’s greatest joys were cheering on his grandchildren in their many activities, spoiling his loyal dogs over the years and “watching his grass grow” at his Overland Park home.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Benson; his children, Kristin (Eric) Sapp, Aaron Benson, Kodi (David) Berry, and Angeline (John) Martin. He also leaves behind 7 loved grandchildren: Rylee, Carson, Ashley, Beau, Camryn, Mia, and Matthew. He is also survived by his brother, Larry (Terry) Benson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Friday, June 19th, at 2:00 PM at Village Presbyterian Church, 14895 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66221. A reception will immediately follow.
