Mark Douglas Shepard

Jul 03, 1954 - Jun 14, 2026

Mark Douglas Shepard, 71, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on June 14, 2026 after a long illness. He was born in Salina, Kansas, to Max Shepard Sr. and Beatrice (Peterson) Shepard.

Growing up on a small farm near Chapman, Kansas, Mark was known for being mischievous. Pictures of him as a young child often captured a sparkle in his eyes. Once after a relative’s funeral, he somehow managed to sneak away and eat eight pieces of chocolate cake.

He discovered a passion for singing and acting and excelled at both while at Chapman High School, where he was a member of the Senior Mixed Ensemble.  His first role actually was in the eighth grade, where he starred in “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” Perhaps foreshadowing his decades-long battle with numerous health issues were the lyrics: “With a heart of gold … you bravely face adversity; you’re cheerful throughout the day.” These lines poignantly depict the approach Mark took to facing his many life-threatening illnesses.

Another longtime love was Lawrence and The University of Kansas, where he graduated as a proud Jayhawk. In his final days, Mark still spoke of his college days with great fondness.

From an early age, Mark loved to entertain and make people laugh. As a boy, he would entertain the family and strangers by standing on his head. He also loved to play tricks on friends, but his friends always forgave him. Throughout his lifetime, he was rich in friendships. Not only did he maintain close ties with several friends from his childhood and college years, but as he aged, he continued to develop new, close friendships.

His interest in entertainment resurfaced in later life when he embraced his life’s passion: writing songs and performing with his guitar. He enjoyed a wide variety of music, but his love for The Beatles and The Moody Blues never waned.

Mark is survived by his brother Max (Shirlene) Shepard Jr.; sisters Cindy (Rick) Roenigk and Shelly Shepard; sister-in-law Donna Shepard; nephews Allen (Danielle) Shepard, Brett (Bailey) Roenigk, and Ryan Roenigk; and nieces Kim Shepard, Kristina Rios, Shara Shepard, and Jayci Shepard. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Greg Shepard.

To respect Mark’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral.  Instead, we would invite family and friends to honor and celebrate Mark’s life by listening to his songs on YouTube: “The Road” and “Let’s Dance – Turbo-Charged”.
