James Lawson Blair, Age: 78

James Lawson Blair, lovingly known as Jim, passed away on June 12, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas, at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Jim Blair.

Jim was born on July 7, 1947, in Garden City, Kansas. He spent many of his younger years in Wichita, Kansas, where he attended Wichita State University and earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he built a long and meaningful career as an engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He took great pride in his work and was known for striving for excellence while bringing along his sense of humor, quick wit, and plenty of jokes to brighten the day.

Jim spent most of his adult life in Overland Park, Kansas, where he shared many years with his beloved wife, Julie Thompson Blair, whom he married in 1986.

Outside of work, Jim found joy in learning and connection. He loved taking on research projects, enjoying a great meal, and spending time with those he loved most. In his younger years, he enjoyed rounds of golf and days spent fishing. He lived with determination and resilience and continued fighting to be with his family for as long as he could.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Julie Thompson Blair; his children, Michael Blair and wife Stephanie, Jennifer Hanson and husband David, Brian Murphy and wife Marianne, Megan Murphy and husband Daniel, and Christine Boyd and husband Trevon; his cherished grandchildren, Zac Hanson, Oliver Hanson, Liam Murphy, Charlie Murphy, Ashton Qualkinbush, Adeline Qualkinbush, Camden Murphy, Trevon (“TJ”) Boyd Jr., and Desmond (“Desi”) Boyd; and his beloved dog and loyal companion, Barley.

Jim will be remembered for his dedication, humor, intelligence, and the deep love he had for his family. His resilience throughout life left an impression on everyone who knew him, and his memory will live on in the stories shared, lessons passed down, and moments held together.
