Peggy Mathews-Gray Peggy’s spirit has crossed the eternal bridge into the arms of Jesus. To be welcomed by passed family and friends, June 18, 2026, Born Peggy Joann Powell 11-6-1931, Osceola Mo. to parents, John Leary Powell & Margaret Elizabeth Simms-Powell.
Graduated Osceola HS 1949. Moved to Kansas City, married Frank D Mathews 1951. She became a legal secretary with Mitchel & Meise Law Firm in 1951 until 1960. Son, Frank D Mathews, Jr. was born 1952. Peggy held the office of President of Missouri Legal Secretary Association 1957-1959.
She accepted employment with Kansas City Athletics in 1960. Working in Public Relations, also as secretary to club owner Charles Finley until 1968 when the Athletics moved to Oakland.
Peggy was hired by the Kansas City Royals as an Executive Secretary in 1968. She was the 2nd employee hired into the Royals organization. She remained with the Royals until retirement in 1994. Over 40 years in MLB Administration.
While with the Royals, she met, fell in love, married the Honorable Judge Wm G Gray. Together they lived their Golden Years in a relationship truly made in Heaven. They enjoyed the lake life at Lake Winnebago, Mo. As an administrator, attending baseball spring training was required of Peggy. So Bill would make the annual baseball spring training excursion to Surprise Az. with Peggy. Together they shared so many memories, and now together again, they will share many more. When Peggy married Bill Gray she joined a loving caring, amazing family that offered much joy & happiness. Her bonding into the Gray family made life-long friendships. Peggy is also joined now with mother Margaret, father John Leary, brothers, Jim & Charles (“Rast” as family knew him) Powell, plus a very special, dear companion & friend, Joe D. Mallin. No words can describe the relationship and bond between Peggy & Joe. His wisdom, advice, plus his life’s example was a building block inspiration for Peggy & son Frank Jr. as well as to all that knew him.
Peggy proceeds son Frank D. Mathews, Jr., his wife Kathy Noland Granddaughters Brooke Miller & Amy Bousman Grandson, USCG Cmdr (retired) Zachary Mathews Granddaughter Jaime Drew Picken Their Mother Dory Hamburg-Butterfield The Gray family, Diane, Pam, Bill, Tom, Barbara and Jim (and spouses), as well as 16 grandchildren. Many of which considered Peggy as GranMa Sister in law, Julie Mathews, A very true dear loving friend, Deb Keating. Deb has been with Peggy throughout her illness. Always at her side with comfort and support. Much love and thanks.

Interment will in Village Presbyterian Church Columbarium. June 26, 2025, 1PM Family requests private Memorial services for family & friends.
