Sue Morris, 87, passed away peacefully on July 13 in Overland Park, KS. She was born in El Dorado, KS to Elmer and Una Pond on May 6, 1939. Sue was their third child and first daughter, with baby sister, Lynda to follow. Sue would often claim that growing up in Leon, KS in the 1950s was the best place during the best time. She loved music, playing the piano, organ, drums and trumpet. She also sang in a musical quartet with her three best friends during high school. A standout basketball player during a time when many Kansas high schools didn’t offer girls’ basketball, Sue had a left-handed hook shot that garnered the attention of her future husband, Don.
Sue attended Ottawa University where she met Don Morris, marrying in September1959. The family eventually moved to Overland Park in the 1960s as Don continued a career in education. They raised four children and Sue was at the center of her family. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Sue never missed an opportunity to be a room mother, den mother, cheerleader coach and avid fan at the kids’ events and eventually the grandkids. She was known for her cooking and baking, passing along recipes and traditions that continue with her kids today, especially a Christmas specialty, poinsettia coffee cake, that her mother made. Sue was a gracious hostess, entertaining friends and family with her inimitable style with frequent parties for adults and kids, alike.
A lifelong learner, Sue was an avid reader who always pursued new interests. She worked full-time most of her adult life as a secretary, enjoying the challenge and purpose that kept her sharp. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing different cultures, the highlight of which was a trip to Europe.
Young in mind and spirit, Sue relished her third act as grandmother to five grandchildren. Never missing a ball game or event in rain or shine, Sue was a constant presence. Beyond her role as their biggest fan, she was far more than a spectator. She helped raise the grandkids as their parents worked. Always active, there were bakeoffs, trips to Deanna Rose, pool days, makeovers, and just running if the grandkids felt the need. Grandma was a beloved presence and always the fun place to go.
Sue was born to be a mother and grandmother and her family benefits from her legacy every day.
Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don after nearly 65 years of marriage. She is survived by her four children: Troy (Holly) Morris, Todd Morris, Tracy (Michael) Russell and Tim (Robyn) Morris as well as five grandchildren: Cole Morris, Jake Russell, Madison Morris, Luke Russell and Morgan Morris. She is also survived by her sister Lynda Johnson.
A celebration of life will be held at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Avenue at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
