Born on January 11, 1948, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Larry was the son of the late Clarence and Mildred (Blankenship) Huntley. He graduated from Smithville High School in 1966 and earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Commercial Art from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1970.

Larry married Catherine (Cathy) Davidson-Braaten in 1995. They blended their families, bringing together Larry’s two grown children and Cathy’s three children.  Larry happily and lovingly raised Cathy’s three children as if they were his own.  He never referred to them as his “stepchildren”.  Together they enjoyed a life of adventure, including hiking, kayaking, and antiquing. Larry was an evangelist who loved testifying of his faith in Jesus Christ, tending his garden, and telling stories of his hometown of Smithville. He also cherished the many dogs he had over the years, and above all, being "PaPa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy; his children, Michelle Huntley of Helena, Montana, and Jason Huntley (Kasey), Chelsey Weinert (Daniel), Leah Kary (John) and Grant Braaten (Tabitha) of Kansas City, Missouri; his grandchildren, Hailey, Zach, Karli, Shelby, Aubrie, Delaney, Chandler, Lily, Lucy, Xander, Benji, Benton, and Theo of Kansas City, Missouri; his great-grandchildren Ember and Roman of Helena, Montana; his brothers, Lee Huntley (Dorothy) and Gary Huntley of Smithville, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Prevail Church, 300 S. Bridge Street, Smithville, Missouri 64089. The family will receive friends after the service at the church until 12:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Friends of Megan’s Paws & Claws in Smithville, Missouri.  Please be sure checks are made out to “Friends of Megan’s Paws & Claws” to ensure donations go specifically to the animal shelter.
