Michelle Mook lived life with remarkable energy, fierce determination, and a contagious sense of fun. She passed away on July 27, 2026, at the age of 68, following a courageous battle with cancer at The University of Kansas Health System in Olathe, Kansas. While cancer may have ended her life, it never defined it. Michelle's legacy is one of laughter, loyalty, adventure, and a life exceptionally well lived.
Born on June 25, 1958, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Jerome "Jerry" Mook and Mary Ann Tremayne Mook, Michelle grew up in Shawnee, Kansas, as the eldest of five siblings. From an early age, she met every challenge with grit, determination, and an unwavering spirit. She possessed what many would call "main character energy"-the rare ability to make every gathering brighter, every adventure bigger, and every person feel like they mattered.
Michelle embraced life with enthusiasm. Whether she was carving across the water on a slalom ski at the Lake of the Ozarks or Table Rock, stepping onto a softball field, or cruising the open road on her Harley, she believed life was meant to be experienced fully. A standout athlete, she was a member of the Shawnee Mission Northwest State Championship softball team in 1976 and continued playing competitively for years in leagues throughout the Kansas City area.
Her greatest adventures, however, were often the simplest. Michelle loved her Camaro, her trucks, and especially her boat. Summers were spent teaching the next generation how to master bat turns, survive tube wars, and appreciate long days on the water surrounded by family and friends. She believed some of life's best memories were made with sunshine, laughter, and the people you love.
Michelle graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest in 1976 before earning her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas, becoming a lifelong and devoted Jayhawk fan. As an occupational therapist, she combined exceptional clinical skill with humor, compassion, and genuine kindness. She never simply treated patients-she cared for people, lifting spirits as often as she restored function. Even after retiring in 2022, Michelle continued working one-on-one with families who sought not only her expertise but also her encouragement, warmth, and unmistakable wit.
Michelle found her greatest partner in life in Amy, whom she met through work. Together they built a life centered on friendship, generosity, and community. They hosted countless gatherings filled with good food, laughter, and lake weekends, creating lifelong friendships along the way. Their shared love for animals led them to foster dogs through local rescue organizations, opening both their hearts and home to many animals-some of whom happily became permanent family members.
Retirement only gave Michelle more time to do what she loved most: investing in people. She became the neighborhood's honorary-or "bonus"-Grandma, though she was every bit as mischievous as the children she adored. She proudly led the annual Fourth of July parade, taught kids to drive the golf cart, kept an endless supply of candy and snacks on hand, and created the kind of childhood memories that will be treasured for years to come. Michelle had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome, included, and loved.
Michelle was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ann and Jerry Mook, and her brother, Jerome Mook.
She leaves behind her partner, Amy; her sister, Elizabeth (Pete) Zishka; her brother, Jon Mook; her sister, Andrea (Joel) Zimmerman; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and an extended family of dear friends whose lives are forever richer because of her.
In keeping with Michelle's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, family and friends are invited to gather for an Irish-style wake on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at O'Neill's Pub, 9417 Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas, to do exactly what Michelle would have wanted: share stories, celebrate a remarkable life, laugh until you cry, and cry until you laugh. As the Irish saying reminds us, "Only the Irish looked at death and decided the appropriate response was to throw a party.• Michelle never passed up a chance for either a celebration or the people she loved.
Michelle's life reminds us that it isn't measured by years alone, but by the joy we create, the adventures we share, the kindness we extend, and the lives we touch. She lived boldly, loved deeply, laughed often, and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to ripple through the countless family members, friends, patients, neighbors, children, and animals fortunate enough to have known her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary in Spring Hill, Kansas, in honor of Michelle's lifelong love of giving every animal a safe place to call home.
