Dahl Metters was born in Oak Park, IL on September 25, 1941. He was raised in St. Paul Mn. Dahl received a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1963. He joined the United States Air Force shortly after graduation. He served in Perth and Alice Springs, Australia as well as assignments in Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. In 1972 he received his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH graduating at the top of his class. In 1979 he had his final assignment in Okinawa, Japan for four years. He retired after 20 years at the rank of Major in 1983.
After the Air Force, Dahl went to work at the newly formed Sprint Telecommunications in Burlingame, California. He worked for Sprint in California, Georgia, and Kansas; retiring in 2016. Dahl’s co-workers have remarked that he was a wonderful manager and mentor. He was said to be one of the kindest men they have known. He was well loved by all who worked with him.
In 1970 he married the former Erin Kathleen Gay. They celebrated their 56th anniversary in June. He passed away on August 8, 2026, at Kansas City Hospice House. Dahl is survived by his wife; sisters Diana, Nancy, and Lucy; and brother Paul.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am , Saturday, September 5 Christ Church Anglican, 5500 W. 91st., Overland Park, KS.
