Primitive tool collecting, antique papers, and perfecting his campfire stew recipe were just a few of Al Hedrick’s favorite things.

Al Hedrick of Liberty, Missouri, celebrated his 88th birthday this past June with a canoe and fishing birthday party. On August 30, 2026, he took hold of Jesus’s hand and passed away peacefully.

Al was born in Oak Grove in 1938 to Doris Long, a hardworking single mother. When Al was 14, Doris helped him land his first job as a typesetter. That early opportunity introduced him to what would become his lifelong career in newspaper typesetting—a career that evolved over the years into printing and advertising as we know it today.

Al made lifelong friends while attending William Chrisman High School and joined the Marine Corps after graduating in 1956.

While attending Junior College of Kansas City, Al met Brenda at the library. The Lord blessed them with a life built around family gatherings, maintaining their 1913 home, and all the details of the monthly Anna Maries’ tea parties.

Al was often spotted at the grocery store gathering last-minute party supplies, and he always enjoyed his post at the end of the driveway, welcoming tea party guests. The family celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on August 18, 2026.

Al is survived by his wife, Brenda; his two daughters, Sarah Mathews (Pat) and Selena Speaks (Mitch); his four grandchildren, Nick Mathews (Brittany), Wren Luft (Ethan), Molly Gates (Devin), and Haden Speaks (Kara); his six great-grandchildren, Eleanor Joy, River Scot Edward, Adeline Louise, Forest Scot Edward, Isla Birdie, and Hunter William; and his sister, Geri (Hedrick) Adams.
